Teams from across the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team, Mid and West Wales Mountain Rescue Service, Fire Brigades Union Cymru/Wales and All Wales Urban Search and Rescue took part in a major life saving and multi agency search and rescue operations training at Glanusk on the banks of the River Usk.
With the warm weather and summer holidays fast approaching it is important that people are aware of the dangers of playing and swimming in and around rivers, streams and lakes.
- Low temperatures can cause the body to go into shock and hypothermia which can lead to drowning.
- Plants can get tangled around you and rubbish can trap you as well as cause injury.
- The water may be much shallower than you expect and cause serious harm or life changing injuries if someone jumps in, as well as being much deeper than expected.
- Waterborne diseases such as Leptospirosis (Weil’s disease).
