Fishing at Glanusk
Fishing report 2010
Date: 26th August
Water, water everwhere and not a drop to...!! Heavy rain over the last 24 hours has meant this mroning the river is carrying an extra 3 foot and rising with more rain forecast for later today. We are all optimistic that this should bring fish up and looking forward to soem good salmon and trout fishing over the next few weeks.
Date: 26th July
July, not unexpectedly has been difficult with low water and mainly bright conditions. The rain over the last 7 days has freshened the river and the trout fishing is expected to improve.
Date: July 12th
We now have a webcam installed, so you can click here to view the river levels (follow the installation prompts if they appear)
Date: 3rd May
As last year, April saw some spectacular Grannom hatches almost daily. The rain over the last few days was very welcome to fishermen as well as gardeners! and has certainly freshened up the river. Trout are now likely to feed at any time during the day and May should offer the cream of the sport.
Date: 13th April
The river is fining down nicely following a period of heavy water. Fly life is improving and with a good head of trout the next few weeks should provide some good fishing. Good to see the Sand Martins are back!! There has been sighting of a family of otters playing at the riverside.
Fishing at Glanusk
Flowing through the grounds of the Glanusk Estate is the famous River Usk, renowned for it's Brown Trout and, in recent times, Wales's premier Salmon River. Derived from the Welsh name "Afon Wysg" (literally meaning "river abounding in fish"), the Usk starts in Mid Wales, initially flowing in an easterly direction to the north of the picturesque Brecon Beacons, before taking a more southerly course to join the Bristol Channel at Newport.
The Estate has 5 miles of private river, one and a half miles of double bank Usk fishing, offering the visiting angler wonderful opportunities for both Brown Trout and Atlantic Salmon. Access to water is good with well maintained banks and some croys from which to fish.
The Estate has a resident ghillie, Stuart Jarvis, who is on hand should you require guidance or instruction. Please read more about Stuart, one of the Estate's best assets, by clicking on "meet the ghillie".
To appreciate the Estate fully, Glanusk offers exclusive fishing breaks. Penmyarth House is available for guests. Trout and Salmon recently covered the fishing at Glanusk in the July edition, photography by Steve Thornton.
For Usk Trout, the season starts on March 3rd and finishes on September 30th, the Salmon Season also starts on March 3rd, ending a few weeks later than the trout fishing on October 17th. The Usk usually starts with a Spring Salmon run in April building into some very productive summer fishing in May and June. September and October, however are usually the best months.
We are happy to bring a picnic to you by the river for a small charge, necessary for a hard day's fishing!!
